From the box to the first tap

Three of these happen once. The fourth is the only one that repeats — and it is the only one your crew ever sees. Moving a tag to another room is a change in the dashboard, not a new sticker.

The coil is what you’re paying for.

The chip inside is a speck about a millimetre across. The antenna coiled around it is the part that decides whether tapping feels effortless or annoying.

A small coil forces people to aim. A tag people have to aim at is a tag they stop using.

Coming later: the cryptographic version

A second version built on the NXP NTAG 424 DNA chip is planned. That chip signs every tap with a rotating code, so a copied link cannot clock anyone in from somewhere else. It is not what ships today — today’s tag carries NTAG 213, and presence is backed by the registered device, the location signal and supervisor review rather than by cryptography.

Still being confirmed

  • Antenna size. The printed label we priced carries a 20 mm antenna, which makes people aim. We have asked our manufacturer whether the same print can go on a 38 mm inlay. The read ranges above are what a 38 mm antenna delivers, not what we have in hand.
  • Serial and chip pairing. Printing the serial and encoding the chip are two separate production steps. We want it in writing that both come from the same row of our list.
  • Pricing. The prices above are drafts. They were derived from the manufacturer’s NTAG 424 DNA line item, not the NTAG 213 one.
